Join us for our second collabo wine dinner with Amanti Vino + Kumeu River. Join us on Tuesday, May 7th @ 7:00pm at South & Pine as we welcome Paul Brajkovich of Kumeu River Wines to Morristown. Move over Marlborough --- the epic wines from the Kumeu region of Northwest-Auckland need to be on everyone’s radar. Especially if you are a lover of terroir-driven Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
Founded by the the Brajkovich family in 1944, it would be hard to exaggerate the importance of this emblematic estate Kumeu and their famous wines in the renaissance of winemaking in the North Island. With more than a half century of winemaking history under their belts, the quality is truly in the glass. Like all great winemakers, their philosophy is simple: they endeavor to grow grapes of the highest standard express the terroir in which they are grown. In the mid-1980s, the Brajkovich family began focusing on a more Burgundy-influenced style of Chardonnay. Featuring hand-harvesting, long fermentations using indigenous yeasts, extended lees aging, and malolactic fermentation --- and the estate hasn’t looked back. The result has been a series of wines that are innovative, distinctive and unique in both style and quality for New Zealand. The family's hard work and commitment has been duly recognized – their Chardonnays are considered amongst the best in the world. Kumeu River wines balance wonderful acidity with great concentration and structure – a characteristic that has become the hallmark of this amazing estate.
The Terroir of Kumeu: Despite being situated well north of New Zealand’s other growing regions, Kumeu’s climate is cooled through its close proximity to both the Tasman Sea and Pacific Ocean. These two large water bodies generate cloud and help to moderate the climate, keeping peak summer temperatures low. The mild temperatures contribute to the unique conditions that enhance the fantastic aromas and flavors from classic varietals like Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This coupled, with the mineral driven, clay based well-draining soils, is also factor that is critical to the quality of Kumeu River’s grapes. And of course, 75 years of family tradition.
